I think of building alters as a part of the sacrificial system of atonement that existed before Christ. If I understand what JD is saying, building alters today is worship, the final part of the on-going “God Cycle.” It is also marking “God Moments and faith milestones” in your life. If that is the case, then the preparation for building an alter is what we should do to prepare for worship. Individually and collectively we shed our idols (repent of our sins); we rededicate (consecrate) and purify our hearts; we put on our new nature (change our clothes) and then we praise and worship God in remembrance of Him and what He has done. As far as marking God moments and faith milestones, I believe that is part of our testimony (spiritual journey). There have been many in my lifetime, but the most recent has been engaging others in banded discipleship.
