There is no question in my mind that I find the compassionate, loving, gracious, faithful, and forgiving God the most comforting and encouraging. The Holy, righteous, and judging God of wrath that does not leave the guilty unpunished and even punishes the children of the guilty to the third and fourth generation is not very comforting or encouraging. It is frightening and it should be until you realize who the guilty are. The guilty are those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him” (John 3:16-17). The guilty are identified in verse 18, “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.“ The guilty are not sinners, the guilty are those who do not believe in the Son of God, Jesus Christ. This is comforting and encouraging for believers, but it should also be motivating. Those who believe, those who are hidden in Christ, should not hide and rest on our salvation. We should be compelled to reach out to the guilty and share the good news of salvation in Christ with them before it is too late. Lord let it be so with me!
