God is as real to you as your worship is real to him. There was a time and even today, I am a little suspect of linking “real” worship to physical expression, especially expressions like holy laughter or falling down. Real, authentic, worship for me is when we present our bodies as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). Real worship is not what we do in a “worship service” it is what we do when we do what He says to do. However, I have learned that there is a direct correlation between physical posture and worship. The raising of hands or bowing down is a physical form of worship that enhances the experience of worship. Just like shouting, “go dogs” enhances the experience of attending or watching a football game. I often say, that if you can do the “tomahawk chop” for the Braves, you can raise your hands to praise God. Physical acts of humility and praise enhance and make our worship more real for both us and God.
