Today’s text and JD’s reflection is why I am not a literalist when it comes to Bible interpretation (The Bible says it and I believe it, especially if it comes from the Authorized King James Version). A literal interpretation can lead to bad teaching and harmful application. Don’t misunderstand what I am saying, I firmly believe in the authority of scripture, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2Timothy 3:16&17). The Spiritual Reading (Lecto Divina) of God’s Word is a powerful means of personal revelation and application, but for interpretation and teaching we need serious Bible Study and this is where Biblical Scholarship is important. Determining Context is the most important element of Bible study and this is where Biblical Scholarship can be the most helpful. I suggest consulting multiple perspectives.
