This is a question that I have wrestled with a great deal. I was raised in a middle class American home. I am not part of the ruling class elite, but I am not poor by any means, especially now. I have benefited from living in the greatest country on earth. I got an education, worked hard, married a Godly woman, and I have followed Jesus all of my adult life, and now I am reaping the benefits. Does this disqualify me from being a “real” follower of Jesus? I don’t think so. I think this scripture has been misinterpreted by many. The problem is not being rich. The problem is the love of money, power and status. The problem is worshiping a poor homeless carpenter from Nazarus on Sunday and ignoring the poor on Monday. Any one who answers the call from God and comes to Jesus can be a real follower of Jesus, rich or poor.
