Tying obedience to profound love of Christ is a major distinction. You can be forced to obey by those who have power over you or because there are dire consequences to disobedience. When love is the motivation, obedience takes on a whole new meaning. It becomes a privilege and a blessing not a burden to bear or fear.

We don’t obey Christ because he has power over us, which He does, but He does not lord it over us. We don’t obey Christ because we will loose our salvation, die and go to hell if we don’t obey His commandments. God’s Grace and unmerited favor has removed the wages of sin and disobedience for those who believe in Christ. I hasten to say that this is not to say that there are not consequences for living outside of God’s Will, even for believers. What I am saying is that when we deeply love Christ, the relationship causes us to want to obey His commandments. Obedience out of love is the more excellent way!
