The Story of Two Altars – Judges 6:20-24

The big take away for me from this Text and JD’s reflection is that our “Altars to Baal” can not coexist with our Altar to God. The First Commandment says, “you can have no other God’s before me” (Exodus 20:3). You can’t hold on to mammon and hold on to God. You have to tear them down and burn them on the Altar to God.

I don’t know many Christian’s that have actual Altars or Poles to other God’s in their life, but we do put our faith in other things like money, power, possessions, and pleasure. I have already mentioned materialism and consumerism and how I try to deal with that in an earlier reflection, but as I ponder the question for today I realize the biggest Altar that I have to tear down and replace is self-reliance. In some ways, I worship myself and my abilities to provide.

I wish burning our altars to other gods could be a one time event, but I find that I have to tear them down daily or I will slowly build them back or allow them to coexist, which does not work.
