On Mouthing the Word of God – Joshua 1:7-9

The Word of God is the most powerful weapon and the only offensive weapon we have in the Armor of God. It is the “sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:17). The spoken Word is especially powerful. This is why we should memorize scripture, so that when we need it, we can recall it and recite it. Phrases like, “be strong and very courageous” become life verses that we can use for encouragement. Scripture is our North Star and compass and without it we are lost. “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

The original word was spoken and not written down until much later. Even then, very people could read or had access to the written word or a Bible. We are so fortunate to have the written word so available to us, yet so few take time to read it and speak it out loud. Reading and reciting the Word of God has the highest correlation with spiritual growth of any spiritual practice. We would do well to heed what Moses told the Israelites in the Shema, which Jews recite everyday, “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). If more Christians would do that, we could change our world.
