Day 13 – The Holy Spirit

On the sixth day of each week of our study, we watch a short animated video. Today’s helps us to better understand the Holy Spirit.

Did you hear the line, “learn how to live by the energy and influence of God’s Spirit”? The Bible teaches that if you know Jesus, you have received the Holy Spirit. You do not need to beg him to come into your life. However, we can always ask the Father for more of his life-giving Spirit. Jesus said in Luke 11:13, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” In bands, we reflect on how the Spirit is speaking and moving in our lives. This practice actually helps us cultivate awareness of the Holy Spirit’s work. We may not all feel the Spirit or have the same experience, but rather we tune our attention to the Spirit’s work and ask for more. Billy Graham once said, “Don’t confuse the Holy Spirit with an emotional feeling or a particular type of spiritual experience.”

Consider today that just as God’s Spirit hovered over the waters in Genesis 1, God’s Spirit is pointing you to Jesus and transforming and empowering us so that we can love God and love others. This is why we give particular attention to the Holy Spirit in a discipleship band. Simply said, the Spirit-filled life is the Christian life. If we are not cultivating attention and awareness of the Holy Spirit, then we likely are not growing much in following Jesus.

The Prayer

Father, I ask you today to give more of this good gift of your Holy Spirit. As I breathe in today, I breathe in your life-giving Spirit. Tune my heart and attention toward your Holy Spirit today. Amen.

For Band Interaction

Consider sharing with your bandmates a time when you experienced the Holy Spirit working in your life in some way.
