Lesson 14 of 30
In Progress

Day 14 – A Good, Perfect, and Pleasing Order

“If you love Me, you will keep My commands. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive Him because it doesn’t see Him or know Him. But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.”

—John 14:15–17

Jesus asked the Father for more than He could give us while on earth. Knowing His limitations (those He willingly placed on Himself), He asked His Father for more. He asked for a better deal. Most of us might think Jesus in physical form would be the ultimate, but the Lord, in His infinite wisdom, knew it was not. He came so there could be even greater intimacy. He had to demonstrate what was possible so there could be more.

He knew the Father would give more because it was His will too. That was always part of their plan, to make available more and better resources. It’s essentially this: the Holy Spirit is a trade up from Jesus!

There is a perfect order to it all. Jesus was only a temporary solution, a stopgap. He is the way that restores us to right relationship to the Father. Jesus had to come first to build the bridge across the vast waterway of sin. Jesus is the only and necessary ferry from the World of the Lost to the Island of the Found. The world is lost because it can’t receive Christ—it won’t receive Him. The world misses Jesus because they aren’t looking; they aren’t seeking. They don’t want any more than they know. We are the found because we seek, we hunger, and we desire more.

The Holy Spirit was the more, but He couldn’t come and knock on the doors of our hearts until Jesus completed His work. The Trinity did it step by step, without failing to dot an “I” or cross a “T.” The Trinity wouldn’t leave anything about this to chance; no point of failure, no matter how small, would be allowed. So Jesus lived. He died. He rose again. He ascended to the right hand of the Father. Then it was the Holy Spirit’s turn. He set fire to the disciples and made them apostles. Their ability to set fire to the world with the gospel of Christ was only possible with His tender, powerful, and indwelling presence. Yet, He had to be patient and wait His turn. The trade up was only possible when all the boxes were checked and the dotted line was signed with the precious blood of the Lamb.

Order is not what I always want from the Holy Spirit. I want instant gratification and intervention, especially when my circumstances are frustrating and painful. It is in those times I feel Him reminding me His will is always good and it is always pleasing’the very best option for me and for many. Plus, His will is perfect. His plans leave no point of failure. His plans are not a house of cards that could come falling down at any moment. His plans are only secure and stable, built on the solid rock of Christ.

Are we able to trust Him enough to wait for His trade up to our thoughts and plans? Even if the answer is no, He graciously gives an extra dose of supernatural strength and faith, enabling us to be empowered to wait for His good, pleasing, and perfect plan to be fulfilled in our lives.

Come, Holy Spirit. Fill me with the hope of Your good, perfect, and pleasing order for my life—plans that will bring a hope and future to me and to many. Let my heart be at rest in Yours so Your way can be made complete in me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
