Day 16 – Best Day Ever

Though I had seen God do amazing things for others in my ministry it took a while for me to find fulfillment in my personal life. I struggled with guilt and regret from the past and loneliness as a single mother. Occasionally when my children made comments about me seeming sad, I knew something was wrong! I wondered what was preventing me from living in the joy, peace, and contentment God intended me to experience. I didn’t understand that these would all come not as my circumstances changed but rather as my perspective changed.

Early one morning a few years ago I felt the Holy Spirit speak to my heart. With my head still on the pillow and foggy from sleep, He said, “Today is the best day of your life.”

What’s so special about today? I wondered. It seems like a normal day to me.

“Live as if today is your best day ever.”

Did I hear the Lord correctly, or was it just my imagination? How would I live differently if I truly believed this was the best day of my life? Well, I was traveling that day and during my flight I asked the attendant for a cup of coffee. I was nearly speechless when she handed me a cup with a napkin that read, “Best Day Ever!”

Now the Lord really had my attention! So I decided to take God up on His invitation and live as though that day really was the best day of my life. What if I cherished each moment as if it was my last? What if, instead of permitting my circumstances to determine my mood, I allowed my mood to change my circumstances? Is it possible that joy could be a choice rather than a destination?

That same day I was attending a Christian conference but was late in arriving. I slipped into the meeting room and found a seat near the back to avoid being a distraction. As the speaker ended his session and we stood to take a break, a young woman behind me tapped me on the shoulder.

She said, “Excuse me. I know we’ve never met, but I feel like the Lord has spoken to me about you.”

“OK,” I replied, a little cautious and taken aback.

“The Lord told me that your positivity changes the atmosphere in the room.”

Change the atmosphere? Me? Now this day was really out of control! First, there was this random thought as I awoke, then words on a napkin, and now a message from a stranger—all happening within hours. Was peace and joy evident on my face simply because I was looking for the Lord in each moment? Perhaps joy is more than a facial expression. Perhaps true joy is the evidence of God’s presence in a human heart.

In Your presence is fullness of joy. (Ps. 16:11a)

And so began an adventure in this new way of life. This was more than a power-of-positive-thinking lesson, rather the Lord was challenging me to set my mind solely on things above. I discovered that by changing my mind-set, I could find the Lord’s presence in every moment and worship Him there! As I chose to thank God when things weren’t going my way and praise Him regardless of how I felt, something shifted in my heart.

In the days that followed, I began to wake in the morning with a sense of expectation. What was the Lord going to do today? Where would He lead and how would He display His glory? The focus of life was no longer on me but rather on Him. With the psalmist I could truly say, “This is the day the Lord has made; [I] will rejoice and be glad in it” (Ps. 118:24)!

Suddenly, ordinary days seemed extraordinary. Every person I met was special, and all of my relationships seemed more precious. I became intensely thankful for things I had never noticed, and joy was plentiful as I became aware of God’s presence in each moment. The decision to live the abundant life was actually creating the abundant life!

Perhaps we have been searching all this time for something we already possess. Each day that we have breath in our lungs truly is the best day ever if we know Jesus! With Christ dwelling in us through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we get to carry a piece of heaven on earth with us all the time. Maybe that’s what Jesus meant when He taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:10).

To experience the abundant life, we must open up the gift of this day and believe that the kingdom of heaven is nestled somewhere inside. Our circumstances may not be easy, but if we have the courage to unwrap each moment and say thank you, we will find the Lord’s presence there with us! The key to living the best day ever is continually offering this life we’ve been given to our Maker in worship. As we exalt God above our challenges, our heartache, our fears, and our doubts, He will fill our hearts with His peace, His hope, and His joy!

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me that You can change my heart as I choose to change my attitude! Help me keep my eyes fixed on You instead of my circumstances. Thank You for being my best day ever. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  • How can we choose to live joyfully without denying the reality of our struggles?
  • How can adopting a best-day-ever attitude draw us closer to God?
  • How does our attitude and outlook affect our witness for Christ?
